did you see a film ;read a book about drugs?tell me what is
The problem is that it has the protagonists visit a jive joint where the piano player sneaks into a back room to smoke a joint and then goes back out to play up a storm . . . leading to decades of musicians realizing that to be really good, they must do drugs. The rest of the plot is about how a "smart" and "good in school" teen is destroyed by involvement in drugs. Actually, what destroyed the teen was involvement in drug running--the dealer got him into a bad situation to keep him as a customer, and one girl ended up shot. Another girl ended up accused and she jumped out a window for shame. A different way to interpret those events would've been to say that if the "shame" of drug addiction were removed, folks wouldn't suicide over it, and if the drugs were legal and taxed and regulated, then we wouldn't have dealers pulling such cons to keep customers (because the government would be the only seller.)

These facts of re-interpretation show that the script itself was badly, hurriedly written, which is why it's the only anti-drug, cautionary movie still shown today--to be laughed at. copyright ybarra-cgm
