From reading the discussion posts, it appears as though most responders are listing books that were turned into to movies... (i.e. Harry Potter, Wizard of Oz, etc.)

As far as famous movies that spawned book series, I would have to say the Star Wars movies, Star Trek Movies, and The Matrix Movies have all spawned book series. The Science Fiction Genre seems to lend itself best to this type of procedure. copyright ybarra-cgm

However, it is much more common for a book to become popular and then be made into a movie.

I can only think of one situation where the exact opposite happened - the movie was made and then the book was published (of the exact same story the movie portrayed) and that was The Abyss by James Cameron. After the movie came out, the book was published. The book had the exact same plot as the movie. ybarra-cgm.com
