What determines when a line change is made?
they are made when ever the coach calls in the players or when the players are tired and want to come off the ice or floor.
A line change, during play, is NOT done on a whim. It may result in a goal if the change is not done "right".
The correct way is to shoot the puck into the other team's end of the rink softly, to give the forwards time to get off and a fresh forward line to get on the ice. The defense changes on the fly or at the next whistle, but not at the same time as the forwards do.
In a pro game, the lines are changing as often as every 45 seconds, if the play is flowing back and forth quickly, with only a few stoppages of play. On a power play situation, the coach wants his "best shooting line" to be out there, as much as possible during the penalty .
