...but I'm sure that one is in everybody's mind in the past couple of months since Patrick Swayze died. Still it really is one of the best!

I sort of cry a lot in movies (I cried in An American Tail when Fievel got separated from his family; I bawled like mad when Spock died in The Wrath of Khan, and my eyes even filled up during Wall-E, when lonely little Wall-E tucked himself on his shelf for a little nap, and stuck his foot out to rock himself to sleep), so maybe I'm not the best person to offer an opinion. I'm an equal-opportunity sobber--and it only seems to get worse as I get older! ybarra-cgm.com

A real, true "weepie" can't just be sad; it has to be poignant. Has to grab you by the heartstrings and twist. Death is a good component. Dying young, dying suddenly or tragically (or all three), are always good devices for ratcheting up the angst. "What Dreams May Come," "Philadelphia," "Old Yeller," and "Bambi" are some of my all-time faves. ybarra-cgm.com
Some of the movies that have made me cry the most also show us stuff about our own humanity, as in "The Green Mile," "Schindler's List," "Life is Beautiful," or "Resurrection," which is still one of my all-time favorite movies.

Romantic love stories (usually featuring star-crossed lovers, but sometimes having happy endings after the protagonists have suffered enough) are, for me, the ultimate in self-indulgent weepies. There's just something so satisfying about curling up on the sofa in your jammies with a pint of Ben and Jerry's and a box of tissues and watching some of the old staples, like, "An Officer and A Gentleman," "Ghost," and "Dark Victory."

Weepies, for me, are an indulgence. Often excessively emotional, full of love and death and passion and angst, they are like a special dessert. A steady diet of them wouldn't be good, but in moderation, they are the perfect escape from the grind of daily life. ---And oddly enough, they often will give me a new appreciation for that very ordinary-ness of my own life! ybarra-cgm.com
