Everytime I asked my kids when they were little to pick something up I went overboard with the PLEASE and Thank Yous.

Eventually when they wanted something, it was ignored until the Please was said. As I responded giving them something I held it until the Thank you came out. copyright ybarra-cgm

I also made sure they knew to show appreciation helping the neighbor that always baked cookies for them to rake her leaves. It took some time and focus but eventually stuck and now they are adults that the Please, Thank Yous and Appreciation comes naturally.

I have worked with adults and company owners that could not bother even saying Good-Morning to the employees. They would walk in at the place of business, avoiding eye contact. One time, as I was the right hand of a company owner she said: "Why do you bother wasting your time saying good-morning to the people?" I told her she should try acknowledging the people that work for her and she disagreed saying: "They will think of me as a friend and I have no desire of friendships because if they think I care they will expect me to be understanding with their "family issues" , being late, needing more money etc." copyright ybarra-cgm

I would not rely on a book to teach something they should learn from the parents. copyright ybarra-cgm
