Why do my video upload attempts on Facebook stall out?
First, you must look at the size of the file that you are uploading. It is gigantic: 698 megabytes. That is about 70 minutes of audio and video (give or take), which is far more than the 5-minute maximum imposed by Facebook. Thus, when you have uploaded approximately 50MB (as 10MB per minute is a rough "rule of thumb" guide for movie file size), the server could be suspending the connection or throttling it down to next to nothing to prevent overuse of its resources and as an effort to prevent malicious attacks (or uploading of inappropriate content such as full-lengthy copyrighted movies). copyright ybarra-cgm
Second, you need to consider your connection speed. Looking up the ISPs in your area (Verizon, Comcast, etc.), most of their plans have as little as from 128Kbps to 768Kbps upstream (upload) speed. That equates to 16K to 96K per second of file transfer capability. This is as fast as your outbound connection can go on these plans. (What most ISPs advertise are the downstream (download) speeds. For example, Verizon's economy deal has a download speed of 1Mbps (a little slower than a typical DSL connection or T-1 leased line) but the upload speed is only 128Kbps. So, while browsing seems to work fairly well, outbound traffic such as movie transfers to Facebook's servers move along at a snail's pace. If we assume that you have this 1M/128K connection and that you are trying to upload that CD-length movie, it would take you 44,672 seconds (assuming no retransmissions due to errors)--also known as over 12 hours--to transfer that entire movie file.

What you need to do is whittle down the size of your file and consider which level of service you have from your ISP to see whether you might want to consider upgrading within the same provider or switching to another provider's more competitive and speedier plan. If you have the ability to get AT&T's U-Verse service in your area, I would recommend considering it as it is very economical for the speed. (I'm getting 18Mbps down and 3Mbps up for the same price that I was paying for 7Mbps down and 512Kbps up just two months ago: about $45 per month.) ybarra-cgm.com
