No, if you cannot access the Internet, then no one from outside (on the Internet) can access your machine.  So, what can you do?  That is what I shall tell you. copyright ybarra-cgm

You will need to pull the hard drive from the infected computer and run virus scans on the hard drive with another computer.  If you are not comfortable doing this, then see if you can get someone you know who is comfortable around the inside of a computer to do this for you.

The three utilities I recommend for cleaning up the infections are MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware, SuperAntiSpyware, and Norton Antivirus 2010.  I use these successfully every day in my business and am actually making use of them right now on two clients' machines while I type this response to you. ybarra-cgm.com

If these utilities are not already installed on the machine that will do the scanning (the diagnostic computer), download them from the following websites: copyright ybarra-cgm

and then proceed to install them.  Even though they have just been downloaded, make sure they have up to date definition files by using the update function within each program just prior to using it.

You may proceed with the scan in any order that you wish but I tend to start with MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware.  When you run the scan, make sure you tell it to do a full scan, not a quick scan.  This way, it will root out infections no matter where they sit on the hard drive.  Use the similar options in each of the other programs as well.  Each scanner may request a reboot after the completion of the scan.  Definitely reboot so that it makes sure to complete its routine of destroying the infections, then proceed with the next scanner.

Once all three are run, put the hard drive back in your computer, boot it up, and then download and install the same three programs onto your machine, do all the updates for the three programs, and then do the scans again.  The reason being that there are some infections that hide from an "external" scan that will be found from doing the scan from the "home" computer. ybarra-cgm.com

If you are unable to get onto the Internet, then there are a few things that could be in error.  First, if you are using Internet Explorer, go to Start|Control Panel|Internet Options and then click on the Connections tab on the window that appears.  Down at the bottom, you will see a button that says LAN Settings.  Click on that.  Make sure that all the check boxes on the next window that appears are *not* checked.  If any are checked, click on them to uncheck them and press OK.  Press OK again on the original Internet Properties window, then try to get onto the Internet again.  Chances are that you should be able to do so now.  If not, then drop me a private message and I will see if I can help you further. copyright ybarra-cgm

For this answer, I will assume that you can now get onto the Internet.  Download the three utilities, do the updates, and scan the full machine as before.  This should root out any stragglers still remaining on the machine.  Just like before, reboot when requested to do so.

Once all this is done, you should be free of the infections.  Now, if you are one of the all too many who still use Internet Explorer, take my professional advice and get something else without delay.  Internet Explorer is correctly nicknamed Internet Exploder because it is so prone to invasion and it is because of Internet Explorer that most people's machines get infected.  I strongly suggest you use Netscape Navigator, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Opera, or Apple Safari instead of Internet Explorer.  All these can be downloaded from CNet's Download.com at the following websites:

Apple Safari download.cnet.com/Apple-Safari/3000-2356_4-10697481.html copyright ybarra-cgm

Beyond that, I strongly suggest that you invest in Norton Antivirus to make sure that you keep your machine clean from now on.  It is the best and most efficient antivirus on the market in my professional experience (as evidenced by the numbers in the chart on my business website, www.bdcusa.com/viruscnt.html) and it is very inexpensive: only about $40 for a full year of unsurpassed protection, protection that is trusted even by the US Government.  (I have done network security for the federal government and this is what they had me install, so I know this first-hand.) ybarra-cgm.com

Now, you might wonder why three programs are used to remove the infections instead of just one.  That is because each scans for a different class of infections in a different way.  SuperAntiSpyware removes, obviously, spyware and other types of infections but does not work so much on viruses, worms, or Trojan horses.  MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware works on Trojan horses and most spyware but, once again, not viruses or worms.  Norton Antivirus sweeps across the table and handles all but concentrates most heavily on viruses, worms, and Trojan horses.  Using the three of them together, there is little chance that an infection will find a way to remain behind and, thus, the reason that I use them in my business. ybarra-cgm.com

Both MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware and SuperAntiSpyware are free while Norton Antivirus is a commercial program.  Though there are those who suggest that a free antivirus is "good enough," I shall point you again to the article on my website at www.bdcusa.com/viruscnt.html that shows how poorly the highly-touted free programs such as AVG and Avast perform.  Thus, take this professional's opinion and do not put the security of your computer into the hands of those lackluster utilities. copyright ybarra-cgm
