If you have Windows, you want to go into Settings, then Add Hardware and let the Wizard see if it finds the DVD drive. If it sees it, highlight it and let it install it. copyright ybarra-cgm

If that doesn't work, you can shut off your PC, open it up, disconnect both cables from the DVD drive. Turn the PC back on. Shut off the PC, connect the cables back to the DVD drive, and turn it back on. Windows has plug-and-play and should automatically detect it, as long as it is still working. Perhaps the drive is actually working and you just need the software program that came with your drive that burns disks. After all, you were able to use the Windows disk to reinstall Windows. You need to look for your install disk with a program on it like Nero or Record Now! You may be able to find free or demo versions of these programs out on the Internet. And in the future, don't use defrag. As you found out, defrag can break perfectly fine files by moving them around. People think defrag will speed up their computers, but most of the time it's malware or some other problem slowing down a computer.
