Has anyone tried one of these "teaching" guitars?

I don’t know much about this guitar, but I do know about the brain and how it learns (I have a Ph.D. in psychology, one of my specialties is developmental psychology - or learning, and I have also taught myself how to play guitar through books, videos and friends).

If you already have experience playing bass, then you probably already know that the hard part of playing is NOT knowing where to put your fingers, how to tune, or the like - it’s training and strengthening your hands to get them to do what your brain tells them to do!  Sure, it’s easier to not have to refer to chord charts or tab when first learning a song.  But it only takes a short time to learn WHAT to play and MUCH longer to get good at playing it.  For example, you can’t learn how to play piano by copying a player piano.  You may be able to learn how to COPY the songs it plays, but you won’t learn about keys or scales or dissonance.  You won’t learn how to write songs and you won’t learn how to read or write music (to "communicate" musically with others).

As a general rule, when it comes to learning something that requires the brain to interpret and the body to respond (like reading, sports, art, etc.) "shortcuts" become meaningless after beginner levels, and can even interfere with future, more complex learning, required at higher levels due to allowing the student to "skip" certain important steps that create the necessary foundation.  Think of math as an example.  Sure, you can let your 2nd grader use a calculator for basic computations, and he will have a much easier time getting the right answer.  But he won’t have the basic skills expected and needed to learn higher levels of math.

If all you want to do is learn chords to write songs and "communicate" to other musicians, then your focus should probably be on learning theory anyway - which I doubt can be adequately taught through a "teaching" guitar.  I suggest spending your money on a quality guitar and individual instruction instead.  For that amount of money you could get a top of the line Taylor guitar with perfect action and tone quality, which I doubt can be effectively produced on such a computerized replica, same way that albums always sound warmer than CDs.
