Catching a ball requires several skills to work together. First is eye-to-hand coordination. The second is arm motor skills. The third, if he has to run to the ball - is using the brain to estimate where the ball will land and how to move the legs to get there.
The combination is tricky. Kids develop different skills at different ages. Some develop 2 of the skills abut not the third. Some none. The occasional kid develops all three early and is considered 'coordinated'. ybarra-cgm.com

You didn't tell us how old the kid is - but if he is less than 8 or 9, then you are expecting too much. If he is over 8 or 9, then keep in mind that everyone grows at his own rate. And there's not much you can do about it. if the already have the skill, you can help shapre it and improve it, but you can't create a skill that isn't mature yet. ybarra-cgm.com

One other thing: don't push it. If you do, the kid feels like he is disappointing you, and that causes him to resent the pressure, and by extension, you. Let these skills evolve. copyright ybarra-cgm
