How do you know when a school is accredited?
Higher education schools have different organizations that come in evaluate them for accreditation every 6 or 7 years. For South Dakota, the organization was NCREL which might be the same as Minnesota. copyright ybarra-cgm

For K-12 schools the State DOE has information on accredited schools. On-line schools are evaluated similarly to the way brick and mortar schools are evaluated. For instance, schools have to have teachers certified in the area and level they are teaching. A whole county in Georgia got their accreditation taken away a year and half ago, for various issues they weren't up to speed on. They'd received a warning the previous year and had not addressed the issues.

For on-line schools, if your child is going to be enrolled in one, then you could call your state Department of Education and ask, or check their web site. The Florida Virtual School got the award for the best virtual high school in the country last spring (www.flvs.net) - they serve students in the state of Florida for free, and are paid funds by the state of Florida for the number of students they graduate. FLVS is also selling their on-line teaching courses to places all over the globe because they do such a good job. The advantage is that students can get courses on-line that their local school may not offer, or offer at a time they can take. Students can start a FLVS course at any time, and are strongly urged to finish within a "reasonable" amount of time.
Schools in some parts of the US have a variety of situations going on that may make parents choose to take their child into home schooling, or to home school in some topics and enroll in on-line courses in others. I always supported public education, but issues like bullying, as well as a child with special needs that isn't being served, have caused me to recognize that other options are desirable at times.
In Georgia, I have found on-line schools in several county systems around Atlanta. Some of them only use teachers who are already working in the system, but other states don't all have this requirement.

Just as on-line classes have their place in higher education or re-training in the work place, K-12 education may have a niche for on-line classes (they are cheaper to provide than brick and mortar schools - the computer, the heating, maintenance are the parents' responsibility) but I don't see it being everywhere full-time.
