I think that gender stereotyping may be part of the reason -- sports are more masculine than being a librarian (except for the recent "Librarian" movies), for instance.

If you watch a bunch of kindergarden kids, it’s more likely that the boys are going to have a hard time sitting still than the girls, and, in order to learn the alphabet and then reading, the little guys have to be able to sit still pay attention. ybarra-cgm.com

Some parents, not all, perpetuate these stereotypes by not encouraging the boys to read, and by letting their children see them read.
