Here is one mistake folks make... they add a polarizing filter to the camera and it is polarized incorrectly and so messes up the autofocus.  Not sure about your camera but if you add a polarizing filter it should be the circular polarizing type.

You should clean the lens with lense cleaner... you can get a good kit at a photo store (or for eyeglasses) for a few bucks.  Also cotton fabric like a t-shirt works well.  A Q-tip would probaby do a good job of it dipped in a little rubbing alcohol (as a degreaser for fingerprints, etc). ybarra-cgm.com

You might also try resetting the camera to factory settings.... in the menus there is this feature and it should return the camera back to it out of the box state.
