dogs are often the best when they're received at a young age. I prefer to adopt and, though the dogs come with a little emotional baggage, they are grateful and loving. They can be a handful when young, but if you have the time and are willing to put in the effort (TRAINING and EXERCISE are MUSTS!) then you will have a fantastic dog. I have two dogs. One's a seven month old now and the other's a thirteen months. I've had them since the age of 2 months for both. They're absolute gems, but if you don't know how to handle dogs yet then you will definitely need to take them to puppy training classes. Also, make sure you are ready to make a COMMITMENT! When you get a dog, you have a life. . .not just something that can be thrown away and I trust that you will look out for the best interests of the animal.
